This fairy tale is set in the kingdoms of Athena and Qax. It’s a magical brew of a big ol’ juicy problem, generous dollops of secrets, castles, kings and queens, princesses and villains.
The king and queen of Athena have a problem. They desperately need a son to marry off to Princess Vexa. She is the unsightly daughter of their neighbor, King Magnatus of Qax. If no prince is born, Magnatus will take over the peaceful Athena and what the heck, kill all the people of the kingdom.
When Athena’s rulers finally produce an offspring, the queen dies in childbirth. The king finds himself faced with the greatest challenge of all—a girl! Boys are scarce, and no one is willing to give up their son to replace the infant girl.
The ruse is on. The sweet baby girl is named Alexandre and is raised to take on the manly duties of being a prince. Eighteen years later, it’s wedding time. Can the deception continue?

Honestly, this story deserves more than the three stars I'm giving it. It was a great story. It was original and interesting, and had some really important things to say about gender and sexuality. It was also fun... and funny. I got a few genuine chuckles out of it... especially in the last paragraph, when the King of Athena decides what he can live without, considering the alternative.Where I had problems with this book was the fairytale narrative style. I know, I know, this is a fairytale, right? So that traditional Grimms Brothers style is appropriate. But I just don't like that style, and here's why -- it's too omniscient, and as a reader, I don't get enough intimacy with the main characters. I’m told their thoughts and feelings, but I don't experience them firsthand.
The main characters were exceptionally interesting: Alexendre the princess who is raised as a prince, no matter what she'd rather be, and strong-willed Princess Vexa, who is determined to rule the Kingdom in her own right. These characters were just so intriguing - the omniscient distance from their internal struggles frustrated me. And I really started to like King Magnus. Yeah, he was a jerk (a murderous jerk), but he was a cool jerk.
I also appreciated the age difference between Alexendre and Vexa, and I thought a closer third person narrative could have better explored that conflict. Their intimacy was sweet, bold, and sexy, and could have been a lot sweeter and sexier if I was in the mind of a protagonist instead of a fly on the wall.
I think my favorite part of this book was the negotiation of gender roles between Vexa and Alexendre. It was such a great example of romantic couples actually negotiating their boundaries… so many lesbian fiction books do that badly. But again... I felt cheated by the fairytale style narrative.
So basically, (and I totally get that this is just my own opinion) I loved the plot, the characters, the conflict, and the romance. I just hated the narrative style.

The book description gives a good overview of what to expect from this book. a great lunch time/break time or beach read. short and sure to bring a smile to your face, The characters are fairy tale style but with a better development. I would like to see more short stories based on these.
as the books category, title and first page indicates this is a lesbian fairy tale. the topic is woven into the story and the reference to sexual activity is done with good taste.

This novella reads like a modern (adult) alternative fairytale but with a twist.
In order to ensure the continued mutual good relations between the kingdoms of Qax and Athena the royal families from both kingdoms agree to marry their first borns to the other. This isn't unheard of or entirely unusual, however what happens is. The kingdom of Qax has been anxiously awaiting a prince of Athena to marry their Princess Vexa. Not only is Princess Vexa reported to be unsightly, but if an heir isn't produced King Magnatus threatens to invade Athena and make the kingdom pay.
The King and Queen of Athena keep trying and after many years the Queen succeeds in producing an heir. However all is not well, not only does the Queen die in childbirth but the heir is also female. With boys being scarce and not finding anyone in his kingdom willing to offer up their male child in place, the King has no choice but to continue this farce and hope for the best.
I really enjoyed the premise of this book and there are several undertones and stories within stories. There is a little something for everyone. Much like other fairy tales, how some characters think they have no choice but work within the system in order to be happy. That there are characters of all ages and stations who are continuing to learn about themselves.
There are light references to lesbianism, transgender and sexual situations but they are extremely tastefully done.

A fun quick read, just as good as her other books. I really enjoyed this book and hope to hear more about their story. Give it a try you will not be disappointed
This story is a hoot. Disguises, secrets, and a lot more. A very good tale and a joy to read.
But. It was sort of a tongue in cheek novel. I love the concept and the storyline. I especially liked the fairy tale feel of the prose. Good job. Ended suddenly.
it was a lovely, amusing fairy tale. I read it in just an hour. I really liked the characters and how they were just trying to figure themselves out. I love that. Granted, it's not entirely detailed, it really doesn't need to be.
It's quite good, even funny, but I felt that everything wrapped up a bit too neatly, like a procedural finding who'd done it 5 minutes before the end and having to rush the wrap up.
I think it could've used some more time, more detail maybe of their lives or something
